Giving Spirit of Holidays Captured with Guest Services and Community Outreach

WASHINGTON – December 11, 2012 – With the holiday season in full swing, timeshare resorts and owners across the country are celebrating in style—and giving back to their communities.  The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) commends its members for the service and spirit they provide all year, but especially during this time of giving.

“There are so many special ways that families like to celebrate the holidays and very often that involves vacationing,” says Howard Nusbaum, president and CEO of ARDA.  “It’s great to hear what our member resorts are doing to accommodate these guests and to also share with their communities.”

Holiday Inn Club Vacations
provides one special example. This past Thanksgiving, they treated a family of longtime owners to a special day. Chef Josh Moynihan spent part of his holiday creating a wonderful family memory for the Ripple family. Chef Moynihan spent the morning in the Ripples’ villa cooking up a delicious Thanksgiving meal, complete with two 12-pound turkeys and all the trimmings. The recipes Josh prepared have been in the Ripple family for generations. In fact, Josh and Mrs. Ripple even made a squash casserole together using a recipe that’s been in her family since 1902.

“I really wanted to make this a special experience for them,” Josh said. “Even though they weren’t at home, I wanted them to experience the feel of the holiday and to be able to enjoy the smell of the turkey, gravy, and all the other great food cooking in the oven. It was also important that they could enjoy each other’s company and not have to worry so much about the work.

The Ripples visit several times a year and come back every other Thanksgiving. Perhaps this will be the start of a new tradition for the Ripples, and for others who visit them over the holidays.

Wyndham Vacation Ownership
(WVO) is thankful to be a part of many of its owners’ holiday celebrations. Last year, Sharon and Tom Grupe used their ownership to bring four generations of their family together for Thanksgiving…all 38 of them! Family members from across the country flew in to Wyndham Bonnet Creek Resort in Orlando, Florida for the big event.

“It’s such a gift to have the family come together,” said Sharon. “We spend most of our time at the resort, but each family comes and goes as they like, visiting the parks. I just make sure there’s always dinner ready in our suite in case they want to join us.”  Their Thanksgiving feast had the whole family pitching in, and members of the Wyndham Bonnet Creek Resort staff helped secure space for the large family to eat Thanksgiving dinner together. “They were so wonderful; I feel like they’re part of the family,” Sharon said.

Owners at Christie Lodge, located in Avon, Colorado at the base of Beaver Creek resort, also share their holidays with the staff and employees during their annual vacation.  Dr. Jirina Fishman travels to Christie Lodge twice each year from Valley Stream, New York.  At Christmas time, she hosts a family-style meal and party for her guests and staff at Christie Lodge who work to make her stay so memorable.  “She’s been an owner for nearly 30 years, and her stay is always a time we look forward to each year,” said Lisa Siegert-Free, managing director and general manager at the lodge.  The Christie Lodge staff also lends a hand to help set up her dinner party and gathers together extra tables and chairs for her special night.

But ARDA members also take time not only to care for their guests, but also to give back to their local communities.  Christie Lodge has Salvation Army Drop boxes throughout the resort for owners and employees to donate everything from clothing and furniture to packaged food items leftover from their timeshare stay.  The Salvation Army ensures that the items go to those less fortunate throughout Vail Valley and the local surrounding communities.

Interval International
, in partnership with the City of South Miami, sponsors annual holiday events to benefit disadvantaged families in the community where Interval was founded more than 35 years ago.

Each year in November, Miami-based employees raise money to fill Thanksgiving gift baskets with non-perishable food items that are distributed to deserving families. Through the years, hundreds of residents have been helped by Interval employees’ generosity to their neighbors. One of the more meaningful attributes of the outreach is the opportunity for employees to deliver the baskets and meet the families who will enjoy the meals.

In December, Interval’s Annual Holiday Toy Fest benefits deserving children who can visit with Santa Claus and select a holiday gift. Employees will support this year’s 19th annual event by donating gifts and volunteering their time as they do for other community-service initiatives the company hosts throughout the year. During the holiday event, children can also participate in face painting and arts and crafts activities, and enjoy holiday treats.

Honoring All Military That Serve Our Country

WASHINGTON – November 9, 2012 – On this important day for all American veterans, the American Resort Development Association (ARDA) extends its thanks to the brave men and women that serve our country.  Many ARDA members actively support veterans’ initiatives throughout the year, and ARDA applauds their efforts.

“Protecting our country is an important job that too often gets taken for granted,” says Howard Nusbaum, president and CEO of ARDA.  “On this special day set aside for those who have served and who currently serve, we want to honor this special group of people.”

Here’s a sampling of how ARDA members honor our veterans:

Wyndham Vacation Ownership
(WVO) proudly supports military reservists across the company and recently received the “Above and Beyond” Award for their efforts from the Missouri Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Committee (ESGR), an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense. The award honors WVO as an employer who provides exceptional support for military employees by exceeding the legal requirements for granting leave.  The nomination for this award came directly from a WVO employee who is in the National Guard. WVO held her position while she was deployed with her platoon serving our country for 12 months.

For the second consecutive year, Interval International’s Miami-based employees raised nearly $4,000 through a series of bake sales to benefit the Operation Any Soldier program.

Four “Treats for Troops” events, held at Interval’s corporate headquarters and member-services center, generated funds used to ship custom care packages year-round to wounded and deployed service members of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Interval’s employee-driven support of Operation Any Soldier enhances its vacation program for military families with Steel Magnolias, a nonprofit founded by Interval member Deborah Powers-Holloway and her husband Milton. Since 2010, more than 250 travel certificates have been awarded for seven-day stays at Interval member resorts.

Interval’s London-based staff manages a similar vacation program in partnership with Help for Heroes, a charity that provides recovery services across the U.K. for military members and their families who have experienced life-changing injuries or illness. Interval will also be donating weeks to the Resort Development Organisation (RDO), the trade association for vacation ownership across Europe, for the “Give Us Time” program that supports British forces in Afghanistan.

Grand Pacific Resort Management
, located in north San Diego County, includes the Orange County resort San Clemente Cove in its family of 15 resorts.  Bob Crittenden, a current owner at Carlsbad Seapointe Resort is one of the driving forces behind a non-profit organization called San Clemente Military Family Outreach, which provides emergency and morale services to the 1000+ families who are stationed in the north Camp Pendleton Marine and Navy base area.  Each year this organization raises thousands of dollars for meaningful support of military families.  These funds go to emergency car repairs, baby showers, school supplies, and a 1,000 turkey dinner giveaway which provides “turkey and all the fixins” for military families to enjoy in the privacy of their own homes.  The primary fundraising vehicle for these activities is a yearly variety show.  Grand Pacific Resort Management supports Military Family Outreach by donating weeks of ResorTime.com timeshare inventory to be auctioned off to raise funds.

RCI’s Armed Forces Vacation Club®
(AFVC), one of the largest military vacation clubs in the world, is holding its Great Appreciation Vacation Giveaway. Members can enter the Great Appreciation Vacation Giveaway every day from now through December 14, 2012 for their chance to win a vacation for themselves, along with one for a friend or family member that they think deserves a hard-earned break.
The grand prize package includes a week-long accommodation at an AFVC property and a $500 USD Visa® gift card for the winner, as well as a second week-long accommodation at an AFVC property and a $500 USD Visa® gift card that the winner can use or give away to a friend or family member. Along with the grand prize, there will be daily giveaways that include 20 Visa gift cards worth $25 USD each and two Resort Vacation Certificates.

The program, which was founded in 1999, now offers up to 100,000 weeks of inventory worldwide on a Space Available basis. International Cruise and Excursions,
through its travel program for military and veterans, Government Vacation Rewards, founded the Vacations For Vets Program. This program was sponsored by the Walter Reed Medical Center’s “In Honor Of the Troops” Foundation. Over the past seven years, more than 2,000 wounded personnel and their caregivers have vacationed while on rehabilitation leave. Additionally, Government Vacation Rewards (GVR) has donated over $10,000 and 200 resort stays through joint promotions with their military partners, such as the Military Officers Association of America and the Air Force Association. This December, Government Vacation Rewards and Holiday Inn Vacation Clubs are providing travel and accommodations for a severely wounded warrior featured on ABC TV’s Extreme Home Makeover while his home it being remodeled. The show will be the Extreme Home Makeover Christmas special.

Resorts Around the World Spearhead Environmental Efforts

WASHINGTON – October 15, 2012 – The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) recognizes the important contributions its members make to create a greener, more environmentally friendly world—from recycling soap to cleaning up coastlines to using “green” products in resorts.  Companies like Marriott Vacation Club, Bluegreen Vacations, Grand Pacific Resort Management, Wyndham Vacation Ownership, Holiday Inn Club Vacations, and Interval International are leading the way to a cleaner, more environmentally-sound planet.

“It’s one thing to recycle at your resort or participate in a clean-up once in a while,” says Howard Nusbaum, president and CEO of ARDA.  “But it’s quite another to develop and carry out the major initiatives that our members have done.  It’s a real model for other industries.”

Marriott Vacation Club recently announced a partnership with “Clean the World,” a group that recycles partially used bars of soap and bottled amenities from resorts in the United States and distributes the new soap and hygiene kits to communities that lack access to these essential items. Each day 9,000 children around the world die from diseases such as acute respiratory illness and diarrheal diseases, which can be prevented by washing with soap.

Currently, Marriott Vacation Club resorts in the United States have contributed over 13,300 lbs. of soap and 8,840 lbs. of bottled amenities. As a result, more than 71,000 clean bars of soap and hygiene kits have been distributed to 55 countries, diverting 11 tons of waste from landfills across the country.

Clean the World also conducts soap drives for the collection of new soap that can be immediately used and distributed in hygiene kits to those in need.  In just eight weeks, 500 Marriott Vacation Club Owner Services associates based in Salt Lake City turned in a cumulative donation of 16,918 bars of new soap.  This 900-pound donation of new soap was in support of Clean the World’s effort to raise awareness by setting a new Guinness World Record in the category of “Most of One Hygiene Item,” which stands at 10,000 pieces.

Another ARDA member, Bluegreen Wilderness Club at Big Cedar (BGWC), is also a participating property in the Clean the World effort.  Bluegreen Vacations has been recognized for using supplies made only of recycled materials and equipping their guest rooms with a master switch to cut a unit’s power when not in use.  At their Hammocks at Marathon resort, they use non-toxic, environmentally friendly cleaners, have a linen reuse program, and discuss environmental policy at monthly employee meetings.

Grand Pacific Resort Management (GPRM), the California management company of 15 resorts for over 50,000 owner families in the U.S. and Canada, formed a “Going Green Squad”—a group dedicated to a culture fully committed to being environmentally friendly.  Several of their resorts are engaged in unique efforts. For example, The Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort collected a thousand plastic bottles destined for landfills and contributed them to artists who crafted a 10’ x 10’ picture of Marilyn Monroe. After GPRM’s Mountain Retreat resort experienced a fire that damaged its clubhouse, the resort “made lemonade from lemons” and implemented a number of environmentally friendly changes, such as double pane windows and motion sensors to control the resources needed to heat and light the space.

The Holiday Inn Club Vacations® flagship Orange Lake Resort in Orlando, FL recently implemented a resort-wide recycling program—a huge undertaking for the 2,478-unit, 1,450-acre property. The program was piloted in one area of the resort in 2011 and introduced resort-wide in June 2012. It’s a simple, easy-to-follow program: green bags in villas designate where guests can place paper, plastic, metal, and glass to be recycled.

According to Orange Lake’s partners at Waste Management, the recycling program has already saved 208 cubic yards of landfill space per quarter. Other milestones the resort has reached include saving 258,576 kW-hours of electricity, 357,000 gallons of water, and 1,224 gallons of gasoline per quarter. To further communicate the property’s recycling program, the resort created a recycling video that demonstrates the positive impacts of recycling.

Interval International’s Singapore staff recently participated in the 21st International Coastal Cleanup Day on Tanah Merah Beach on Singapore’s East Coast. Despite sweltering heat, the volunteer team gathered 614 pounds of discarded items, clearing a mile stretch of the coastline. The International Coastal Cleanup is an annual event conducted in more than 70 countries, coordinated by The Ocean Conservancy, a U.S.-based non-profit organization. The program aims to collect data on and remove debris from the shorelines, waterways, and beaches of the world’s lakes, rivers, and oceans.

As a part of an ongoing commitment to Wyndham Green, Wyndham Vacation Ownership (WVO) is continuing to support the Arbor Day Foundation by implementing a variety of initiatives at its resorts, including serving Arbor Day Coffee, which is organically grown under the canopy of the rainforest. Each cup preserves one of our most precious resources and ensures indigenous farmers earn a fair wage and have access to healthcare and education. To date, WVO has purchased 280,000 pounds of Arbor Day Coffee for use at its resorts, saving more than 28 million square feet of rainforest.

WVO also switched all personal amenity products to the Eartherapy brand, an environmentally responsible company that uses biodegradable and fully recyclable packaging. The packaging contains an organic-based additive, allowing the containers to fully biodegrade into water and dust when in contact with soil for three to five years, taking less than four percent of the time to degrade than traditional plastic packaging.

Rounding Out One Year of Celebrating Timeshare Fans

WASHINGTON – October 2, 2012 –Using words like “fabulous,” “unforgettable,” and “thankful,” members from Club Meliá by Meliá Hotels International sum up their timeshare experiences in this month’s American Resort Development Association’s (ARDA) Timeshare Fan Spotlight.

Five families that hail from Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, and Mexico share their experiences in a video look at the world of timeshare.  Viewers will hear from these happy members, and also get a glimpse into several Club Meliá resorts around the world.

From Elementary Through College, Industry Supports Education

WASHINGTON – September 6, 2012 – As students across America head back to the classroom, the American Resort Development Association (ARDA) commends its members for the significant contributions they make to support educational initiatives around the country – from supplying backpacks to funding students studying hospitality in college.

“It’s amazing to see all of the incredible charitable and community initiatives our members engage in,” says Howard Nusbaum, president and CEO of ARDA. “It’s clear that education is a priority and we’re proud to highlight a sample of the support our industry is providing.”

One example is with Orlando-based Club Meliá by Meliá Hotels International, a leading international vacation membership club with locations in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and Europe. They partner with Orange County Public Schools for its Community Resources Backpack Project, donating 120 backpacks and mouse pads for students in need.

“We are excited to participate in this wonderful community program and be a part of what Orange County Public Schools does to make a meaningful difference in the success of students and teachers,” said Denis Ebrill, Executive Vice President, Club Meliá.

Orange County, located in Florida, is the 10th largest public school system in the nation, supporting more than 180,000 students and 182 schools. The Community Resources Partners in Education program has promoted business partnerships with schools since 1980.  “We welcome Club Meliá as a new community contributor and thank them for their generosity,” said Pamela Carson, Sr. Manager for Community Resources at Orange County Public Schools.  “Their gift is an investment in our children and in the community’s future.”

Disney Vacation Club, in conjunction with the Company’s Disney VoluntEARS, is very involved with the public schools in the communities where is has operations, including Orlando, Anaheim, Vero Beach, Hilton Head and Hawaii.  Some programs supported include backpack programs, school breakfast programs, Junior Achievement, A Gift for Music (supplies instruments and instruction in music), A Gift for Teaching (supplies teachers with materials like notebooks, pens, art supplies).

Bluegreen Resorts
has again worked with SOS Children’s Villages annual “Back to School and Ready” Campaign, for the fifth straight year. The Bluegreen Employee Action Resource (BEAR) Team collected and delivered donations of school supplies to the foster care neighborhood in Coconut Creek, Florida based on a wish list provided by their children.

At the college level, Interval International has made a long-term commitment to investing in education because the company recognizes the important role it plays in developing the next generation of hospitality industry professionals.

As a strategic partner of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association and a board member of the Caribbean Tourism Organization, Interval and its resort partners have donated more than $400,000 to both organizations’ educational foundations over the past 13 years. These scholarship funds help students pursue an education in hospitality and increases their awareness about career opportunities available within the industry.

Similarly, Interval has endowed a scholarship fund at Florida International University’s School of Hospitality Management for students to attend courses in timeshare resort management. As part of the curriculum, members of Interval’s management team conduct lectures and host tours of the Miami-based Member-Services Center. Students also are invited to attend workshops and panel discussions led by experts at Interval’s annual Shared Ownership Investment Conference, an industry-leading educational forum.
“Our partnerships allow us to collaborate with tourism leaders and resort clients and play an active role in facilitating opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in hospitality,” said Jan Wyatt, Interval’s vice president of corporate marketing. “A skilled workforce is vital to the continued growth of the shared ownership industry.”

As part of an ongoing commitment to support children, Wyndham Vacation Ownership (WVO) has renewed its support of Step Up For Students for the second year in a row with a pledge of $750,000. Step Up for Students is a nonprofit organization that offers scholarships aimed at providing learning options for economically disadvantaged children in Florida. ­WVO’s contribution will fund more than 167 scholarships in the coming year to allow at-risk students to receive a quality education that best meets their needs.

The company’s support of children and education is also evident in its three-year partnership with The Fishing School. The Fishing School is a non-profit youth development organization that provides academic and cultural enrichment support to children and families in Washington, D.C., based on the “Teach a Man to Fish” premise. Since 2009, WVO has donated more than $80,000, in addition to in-kind donations and volunteer time. In addition, the company provides maintenance support of The Fishing School facility, supports the organization’s career mentorship program and WVO associates regularly volunteer at its monthly literacy events.

On an international level, in 1998 ARDA member and philanthropist Christel DeHaan opened the first Christel House in Mexico to give children of poverty the opportunity for transformational change. Between 1999 and 2002, Christel House opened five learning centers in Mexico, South Africa, Venezuela, and the U.S. Today, it serves over 3,600 students, their families, and communities, providing the opportunity for a better life through education, health and wellness programs, life skills, character development, and parent and community outreach. Industry supporters worldwide have helped raise more than $7 million over the past 10 years through the annual RCI Christel House Open.
The impact of helping young people achieve their goal of an education is immeasurable, with long-lasting results for all. To ARDA members and others who are making a difference in the lives of students everywhere, we salute you!

Starwood Vacation Ownership Family is ARDA’s August “Timeshare Fan of the Month”

WASHINGTON – August 6, 2012 – The Gelman Family of Philadelphia had a once-in-a-lifetime experience when Starwood Vacation Ownership and SeaWorld Orlando teamed up to create a unique vacation experience for them…saving a sea turtle.  This touching story is the August feature for the American Resort Development Association’s (ARDA) ongoing Timeshare Fan series.

The three families—the Todds, Augers, and Raders—hail from around the country and each has spent their vacation time at a different Festiva resort.  From a beach resort in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to a lake resort in Maine, to a cozy getaway on Cape Cod, all three families had one thing in common: they felt timeshare made their vacation better

WASHINGTON – July 2, 2012 – The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) is featuring four members from Shell Vacations Club (SVC) in its ongoing Timeshare Fan series.  This is part of an industry initiative to showcase real timeshare owners talking about the reasons they love their vacations with timeshare.

Each of the SVC members  cite a variety of reasons they’ve chosen timeshare as their preferred way to vacation—including more space, adventurous locations, and resorts around the globe—they all say that timeshare makes their vacation better.
“I brought three girlfriends with me on a recent getaway and they were in awe,” said Shell Vacations Club member  Jayne Carney.  “They couldn’t believe we had two bedrooms and bathrooms, and I said, ‘yes, I have this all the time!’”
